The obvious connection between tattoos and individuals of questionable character is not the only reason why tattoos are often tagged with a bad reputation. Although this disreputable connection, which is becoming ever less prevalent with each passing decade, the subject of tattoos has another sinister trait darkening its reputation. This trait although sinister is actually totally misconceived.
There are frequent insinuations about the “addictive” nature of tattooing and being tattooed. Many people have multiple tattoos; whilst many acquire them over a number of years, others will make regular trips to their favorite tattoo studios. Labeling this act as an “addiction” is unfair, unrealistic, and actually rubbish. As each person has their own individual reason for getting tattoos, it is impossible to know what a person’s reason is unless he or she states it; which is not common as getting a tattoo is a very personal thing. Whilst some savour the artwork, others wish to maybe honor a special person, some get tattoos in order to feel a part of a specific group, other people just enjoy the attention that being tattooed brings. In other words, most people have their own personal reasons for getting tattoos, yet it is almost never a matter of merely being addicted to them. If anything that cheapens the process of having a tattoo.
There are two distinct parts to this misconception. Both play a role in giving a bad reputation to the subject of tattoos as well as to the people who choose to have them. Firstly, people are addicted to the tattoos themselves; secondly, that people are addicted to actually getting them - specifically, being addicted to the painful process. Whilst you might question the mindset of anyone who states that they enjoy the pain, it certainly adds fuel the whole misunderstand of the subject.
When interviewed, one tattoo artist remarked that tattoos were a like a “fever”! He was referring to the simple, if odd, enjoyment received by many of his clients in being able to buy permanent artwork for themselves. “I think I’ll get another one” was something often heard in his studio. This in itself does not constitute “addiction” by any stretch of the imagination. Nor did he in any of his years spent tattooing, ever encounter a client who even remotely enjoyed the discomfort of the tattooing process.
The word and its unfortunate mistaken applicability to tattoos, is often put forward by those who know all too well what the word “addiction” actually means. Addiction, in its most rudimentary form, is a compulsion or something over which a person has no self-control. Addiction cannot differentiate between a “want” and a “need”.” Individuals who have numerous addictions– drugs, alcohol, behavioral, etc. can very well become addicted to tattoos. However, that is certainly not the case for the majority of people who decide to get them. Most people who get tattoos do so simply because they want them; they do not possess the weakness of character which leads to an addict being compelled to do something. The concept that a person gets tattoos because he or she is addicted to pain and therefore enjoys the painful process of being tattooed can only come from either the most ignorant or those who have some personal issues of their own.
Unfortunately, both of these misconceptions shed a somewhat negative light on both tattoos and the people who wear them. It is a bad reputation which neither deserve, for there is no evidence in either point of view. While there are those who get tattoos with less than desirable motives, most people who get them do so with no negative attachment to either the tattoos or the tattooing process whatsoever. The bottom line is if you find someone who is attempting to convince you that getting tattoos is an addiction, you’ve probably found someone who actually is an addict and does not realize that most people are not.
