Not everyone is impressed with the Samsung U900- Soul also known as Spirit of Ultra. It is Samsung’s flagship mobile phone for 2008. They had promised a lot of things this year but it seems like they focused too much on presentation and left some details behind.

Sure, it looks great doesn’t it? It has every touch of the future on it. The metallic colors would veer you away from the fact that some of the slots seem to be in an inconvenient place. But I guess it boils down on everyone’s comfort zone.

The slide feature is great. The Magic touch or the touch screen did eliminate the D-pad of the recent models. But when you start accidentally pressing the touch pad when you are closing the phone, then it becomes a problem, doesn’t it?

So what if the Magic touch changes according to the function that you want to use. The buttons are too small for someone who has relatively larger fingers. Although the color can be changed based on the level of personalization done by the user, it still falls short on aesthetics.

It is also a problem that the Samsung Soul isn’t a 3G phone. This makes it highly unpopular for most Americans who rely on the 3G functions that make their lives easier. But the browser speed is declared to be very fast. Unfortunately, portrait orientation is the only way to go on this feature. This becomes a problem but you can make the page smaller so that it would fit the screen. Although the screen is big enough to browse the pages, there is still minimal comfort found in this. Because when you compress the page, you can barely read what is on the site.

Then there is the lack of a separate video player. You would have to go through your files and play it when you have seen it. That would not take that long but can still be a hassle with or without the touch pad functions. It supports most of the more popular types of data like MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and WMV but DivX and those with high bit rate would not be easy to play in this phone. You would have to convert it on your computer before you can put it here and enjoy watching it on your own time. There is an option for landscape, at last a silver lining!

The camera boasts of a face finder but this would work well only if the face is frontal. So if one person moves and the camera would try to focus on another face, then it would look for the one which is facing forward.

Why would Samsung make this their newest addition to the increasingly competitive mobile phone market?

It is because for the size, features and style that you can get in their mobile phone for price less than most slim phones sell for then you have found a treasure! They are pushing for this phone to be marketed well as an economical, functional and stylish phone for the European and hopefully the American market.

When you are considering taking out a new mobile phone contract, make sure that you shop around. Good mobile phone deals can be difficult to find, so make sure you compare all the major retailers.
