Many first time dog owners can’t see why crate training is useful, because it first glance it seems that locking up a puppy in a relatively small cage is the last thing it wants. Worse, some believe the crate should be used as a punishment which is definitely not the case. A crate should be a safe place for the dog to go, where he feels comfortable and happy. It can be a place where he can retire if tired and needing a break from human interaction. In short, a crate is a dogs private space.
Of course, you need to make sure that the dog knows you are still the boss, and can enter the crate at any time. The most important thing is never to be tempted to use the crate as a punishment.
So why is a crate useful? Once a dog feels comfortable in a crate, it can be used to aid in house training, and also in transporting the dog. For example, if your dog doesn’t like cars, you can try putting its crate in the boot as the dog feels safe there. It is also a great way of getting your dog to the vet.
Make sure that the crate is as comfortable as possible for the dog by putting soft bedding in it, making sure it is big enough and by putting a toy in there for the dog to play with. Don’t overcrowd the crate with toys, one or two should be enough.
