If you are having serious trouble with overheads, here are some simple suggestions and tips that may help.

Usually players hit the ball either into the net or long…you do both, making your problem harder to diagnose! The good news is that there are several overhead tips and advice I can give you to help fix your problem.

The general rules:If you are hitting the ball into the net, chances are you are hitting the ball too earlyIf you are hitting the ball long (behind the baseline), chances are you are hitting the ball too lateIf you are hitting the ball wide (to either side) you may just need to stop aiming for the lines!

My suggestion:This is most likely a timing issue. Meaning that for one reason or another, you are not making contact with the ball in the same place every time.

1) This may sound simple, but use your hand to follow the ball through the air

2) Make sure you racquet is back behind your head ready to swing up.

This will ensure that you are actually READY to hit the ball. Many players think they are ready but by the time they start their swing they need to drop the racquet AND bring it back up to make contact on the overhead. This will a) eliminate and extra step and b) get you ready to hit

3) Your overhead should not be much different from your serve. Grip needs to remain the same, swing motion should remain he same, and your stance should be the same. (only difference is that there really shouldn’t be lots of spin on the overhead)

4) Make sure you are underneath the ball at contact.

5) Make sure you are not moving when you hit the overhead

Try out these suggestions, hopefully this will fix any problems, and good luck out there!!
